The Conch
Hannah Lees
South London Gallery, 2012
The Conch is a series of bi-monthly discussion events at the South London Gallery. The events involve a changing roster of South London-based artist collectives and galleries who are asked to invite early career artists to present work, both finished pieces and works in progress, to a peer group of artists, curators and other arts professionals. It is a forum to meet, share ideas, critique work and initiate discussion in a relaxed atmosphere outside of the academic institution.
For the first seven editions, the artist was asked to invite a writer, curator or other artist to produce a text related to their work for a short publication.
Guest Projects nominated Hannah Lees to share her work. She approached me to write for the publication. I took this as an opportunity to experiment with what it means to 'speak for' Hannah and her work. It was a short, semi-allegorical text that attempted to narrate the process of bringing Hannah's art - and the relationship of her work to displacement - to the empty page.
